About the Fund
Although there are no geographic restricitons, the preference is for projects that impact the city of San Francisco. The Fund is interested in the following types of projects/programs:
After reviewing the Fund’s current priorities and limitations, interested applicants should submit an initial letter of inquiry for review. Applicants who receive a favorable response to their initial inquiry will be invited to submit a formal proposal with supporting materials. We encourage applicants who have questions regarding the appropriateness of a project to contact the Fund directly. There are no deadlines for submission; grant requests are accepted on an ongoing basis. In fairness to other organizations, each organization may submit only one request per year for consideration.

General Application Guidelines
- Submissions should be formatted on 8.5” x 11” paper with a minimum of 1” border around the entire page.
- The Lisa and Douglas Goldman Fund maintains a strong commitment to preserving our natural resources and we prefer that submissions be succinct, double-sided, and printed on recycled or tree-free paper.
- Please do not send audiotapes, videotapes, DVDs, CDs, or unnecessary presentation materials.
- Letters of inquiry and proposals should not be bound or put into folders or binders.
- Letters of inquiry and full proposals, with attachments, may be submitted electronically or by regular mail. If mailed, all materials should be enclosed in one packet if possible. Please select one form of submission only; it is not necessary to mail and email your application. We discourage submission of applications via messenger, overnight service, or hand-delivery. Faxes will not be accepted.

- Project Description: A brief narrative description of the project for which the organization is seeking funding, including a one paragraph executive summary, the project title, total project budget, project timeline, and goals and objectives. A letter of inquiry should be a maximum of two pages in length.
- Contact Information: Name, title, address, direct telephone number, and email address of the primary contact person.
- Funding Request: Total amount of funding requested from the Lisa and Douglas Goldman Fund.
- Project Funding: A list of other sources of secured and potential funding for the project, including grant amounts and in-kind support.
- Project Budget: A one-page itemized budget, including revenues and expenses, for the full project. Multi-year projects should include budgets for each year of the project.
If a letter of inquiry is accepted, your organization will be invited to submit a full proposal. Proposals should include the following information:
- Organization Background: A concise summary outlining the organization’s purpose, history, and recent accomplishments.
- Project Description: A detailed description of the project for which funding is requested, including:
- the project’s objectives
- relevance to the organization and community
- evaluation criteria
- timeline
- Project Budget: An itemized full project budget (not just the portion for which funding is being requested from the Lisa and Douglas Goldman Fund), including dates covered by the budget, and revenues and expenses. Please footnote any line items that may require explanation, such as acronyms, abbreviations, shared funding/expenses, pass-through grants, contingent grants, or debt service.
- Current Financial Statements (audited preferred)
- Organization Budget: The organization’s most recent annual budget indicating the dates for the fiscal year covered and including revenues and expenses. Items that may require explanations should be footnoted.
- Balance Sheet for the organization.
- Staff and Salary Information: Number of full-time equivalent staff, salary range for all staff, and median salary. Please indicate the title associated with the highest salary.
- Project Staff: Names and qualifications of project staff.
- Project Funding: A list of recent and pending grants for the project for which funding is requested. Please include foundation names and amounts granted or requested; date funding was received or requested; total amount pending; and total amount secured. For multi-year grants, please indicate the time span for the grant and the amount awarded/to be awarded each year.
- References: Provide the names, direct telephone numbers (including extensions), and affiliations of three references who are familiar with the organization’s work and the project for which funding is requested, but who are not directly affiliated with the organization or project.
- Board of Directors: A list of all current members of the organization’s Board of Directors including their professional or related affiliations and city and state of residence.
- Copies of federal and state tax-exemption letters.
- Supporting Documents: Any other materials directly relevant to the project, such as letters of support, news clippings, or brochures that would be helpful in evaluating the proposal. Please do not send videotapes, CDs, or DVDs.
