The NIH is an organizational component of the Department of Health and Human Services, the goal of which is to improve “human health by increasing scientific knowledge related to disease and health” (OER, 2003).
When awarding grants, the NIH expects to be involved with the grantee in a collaborative effort. The bulk of the grants available through the NIH are for research and fellowships, however they do provide the Public Health Service Grant which provides monies to state, local, and Indian tribal governmental applicants.
